Northfield Shares Impact Stories

Clean River Partners

Clean River Partners, founded in 1990, is an environmental non-profit based in Northfield, MN.  The organization is dedicated to inspiring people and organizations to value, protect, and improve the Cannon River Watershed’s land and water, with a focus on three core values: resilience, equity, and engagement.

In 2022 Northfield Shares awarded grant funds from the Nutting Beautification Fund to support two programs run by Clean River Partners, the Downstream Film Festival and the Cannon River CleanUP.  “Funding from Northfield Shares demonstrates how the community supports us, and how we support the community”, says Executive Director Jennifer Tonko.  “This is an important example of reciprocity.  Having an organization like Northfield Shares lets us demonstrate our values, and what we care about collectively.”

Northfield Shares Impact Stories

YouthBank – Healthy Community Initiative

The vast majority of Northfield youth hold the perception that the community does not value them, their opinions, or their decision-making capabilities.  YouthBank flips this narrative and this perception by allowing youth to be the decision makers about projects that affect them.

For eight years now the Northfield YouthBank, has been making grants to youth led projects here in Northfield.  Northfield YouthBank is a youth-led grant-making initiative which channels money into projects that will improve the quality of life for young people in our community.  It is a process and way of working with young grant-makers that encourages and trains them as they develop essential life and job skills.

Impact in Our Community

In 2018, HealthFinders Collaborative expanded their capacity with a strategic move to a new clinic space in Northfield, co-located with Sterling Pharmacy and a Northfield Hospital Express Care Clinic. Leveraging this new collaborative location along with a grant from Northfield Shares, HealthFinders added dental capacity and expanded their mental health services and teen clinic. Together, these services established HFC as a comprehensive medical, dental, and wellness home for the underserved population in Northfield and surrounding rural communities.

Food has always been a simple and abundant way for volunteers to show their support to the Key. However, during COVID-19, family style meals are not allowed which means donations have had to be limited. The grant from Northfield Shares will provide food security in 2021 and help the Northfield Union of Youth continue to lessen the trauma of the pandemic for youth and families in Northfield.

This organization is working tirelessly to inform people of the resources available in our community and translating important documents issued by the State on the COVID-19 pandemic which are not available in Spanish. With the support of a Stronger Together grant, educational programming will be provided to the community covering topics such as: Public Health, Education, Energy and housing assistance, Health Insurance, Assistance programs, and Legal Support.

Beautification of Northfield is our mission and our vision is a vibrant, aesthetically pleasing community that gives us pride of place. We work with volunteers from many civic organizations to enhance the city we all love in the following areas: urban forestry, floral displays/landscaping, heritage preservation, environmental efforts and overall impression. Our projects are designed to showcase Northfield to all who live, work, play, study, and visit here. With grants from Northfield Shares we have been able to install and landscape around pollinator gardens in the shape of a butterfly, dragonfly, and bee.

The Northfield Shares volunteer portal is absolutely wonderful! It's a place you can see all volunteer opportunities in our community, no matter what your interests or skills are. As a program manager, it's extremely user-friendly. It is a fantastic way to promote our organization's volunteer needs and connect with individuals looking for places to plug in.

The generous grant provided to St. Dominic School from the Pat Lamb and Ele Hansen Charitable Fund significantly impacts 100% of our 160 students with dignity and respect. This grant provides 800 meals for our students, easing the financial burden of lunch costs for families. We are beyond grateful for contributions like these as we pride ourselves on providing an inspiring environment for children so they can excel as confident leaders, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens in a Catholic values-based community.
